Static IP Addresses
Assigning a static IP address means that each time
you log in, you will be given the same IP address
and nobody else will share it.
You do not normally need a static IP but it is sometimes
useful if you have to connect through a company firewall
for example.
Note that some people don't like to use a static IP
because it allows web site owners to track your usage
more easily.
Static IP addresses are set up by going into My Computer,
then into Dial Up Networking, then Right click on
the Joinnet connection and select Properties from
the list. In here click onto Server Types and then
onto TCP/IP Settings. The dot should be, as in the
diagram below, in 'Server Assigned IP Address'. This
is because although you have a static IP address our
servers will assign you the same IP address without
you having to request it here.
